Cheviot Area Walks

Gore Bay Reserve & The Cathedrals (copyright Mark Pickering)

This is a small interesting reserve with a circuit walking track. The track starts and ends by the Gore Bay batches and is well signposted. The southern loop wanders up a curious deep cool gravel gully, then climbs out round through scrub forest to an excellent lookout along the coast. Finally, it winds down another shrub and scrub gully to Gore Bay again. You are sure to spot friendly fantails along the way.

"The Cathedrals" are eroded siltstone pillars, which are a typical example of what has come to be known as "badlands" landscape, after the famous American example. They can be seen from the circuit walk but are best viewed from the road that continues from Gore Bay along the coast. Clearly signposted.

Getting there: Drive on State Highway 1 to Cheviot, then turn down the signposted Gore Bay Road.
Distance from Christchurch: 100km
Walking Time: 1 hour
Facilities: Toilets, cold water, rubbish bins, camping, fishing permitted, tennis court, dairy and service station within 5kms.
