Waiau and Rotherham are located along SH 70 and offer access to the Waiau River, which is brimming with trout for the skilful angler and where the salmon run during February and March.
Situated between the two townships is the Amuri Golf Course, an enjoyable 9 hole course with an attractive mountain backdrop.

Waiau with its historic Victorian buildings captures the heritage and charm of a typical New Zealand country village. In addition to a delightful picnic area and playground, the Village Green features a historic church, jail and Cob Cottage Museum.
The oldest surviving woolshed in the region is located just out of Waiau. Built in 1876 it is T-shaped and originally housed 24 shearing stands. The woolshed is still used today and is protected by a Category I Classification from the Historic Places Trust.
Set in landscaped grounds at Rotherham is Watters Cottage, a great example of an original sod cottage. Erected by John Watters in the 1880s the cottage has withstood the rigours of time and acts as a testimony to the living conditions of many farmhands and their families during the 1880s and is now protected by a Category II Classification from the Historic Places Trust.
What better way to experience New Zealand country life than in a luxury lodge, bed & breakfast or farmstay.
