Camping under the stars
Do you like camping? Then check out the Hurunui Districts range of reserves. Head to Balmoral Reserve (at Hurunui) to camp by the Hurunui River, or Amberley Beach for surf casting, but if you want access to the river and sea at the same time then visit the Hurunui River Mouth Camping Ground (south of Cheviot). www.hurunui.govt.nz
 

Weka Pass Railway (Waipara)
Step back in time and enjoy a trip on a steam train. Available 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month every Sunday in January and most public holidays from Waipara to Waikari and return. Family - $60 return. 
 

Flaxmere Gardens (Hawarden)
Hawarden’s secret is Flaxmere Gardens. Located 300m above sea level Flaxmere is “A Garden of National Significance” and home to Art in a Garden. Flaxmere is a garden that is breathtakingly bold in its design.  
 

Picnic at St Anne's Lagoon Wildlife Reserve. (SH1, Cheviot)
