Culverden and Hurunui

Set in the middle of the wide Amuri basin, Culverden is a delightful country town and a popular stop with travellers.

Culverden is a great place to experience rural New Zealand, stay at the motel, enjoy a farmstay or be spoilt at a bed & breakfast.  Whatever option you choose, you will be made welcome by the friendly locals.

So take your time while in Culverden; hit a round at the golf course, tuck into a scrumptious meal at a cafe, or smell the flowers of the country gardens.

Each October is time for the famous Culverden Christmas Country Fête a yearly event marked on the calendar in many Canterbury homes. Taking place on a rural property, set on around two hectares, the marquees and tents are spread out amongst trees, providing an idyllic setting for women to enjoy some serious retail therapy.

Over 200 stall-holders sell a range of affordable gifts, which are of an amazing designer quality, from hammocks to sculptures and wire art.

Rutherford Reserve in the Culverden township is pleasant for picnics while to the south is the huge Balmoral Forest with its sheltered camping and picnic areas along the banks of the Hurunui River.

The Hurunui Hotel, built in 1868 to accommodate weary drovers, is a historic landmark in North Canterbury and a great place for refreshments. Close by, the Black Hills Heritage Collection offers an insight into the life of early settlers. Heritage farm buildings have been restored and include a pioneer cottage (1871) and stables made from handhewn limestone with cob.
